“Myths About Physical Therapy You Should Stop Believing”

Hey friend,

It’s officially National Physical Therapy Month, so you know I had to talk about one of my favorite things, clearing up a few PT myths that still make me go “hmmm?” even after 21 years in the profession.

Over the years, I’ve heard it all:

💬 “Am I going to get a massage?”

💬 “Do I need a chiropractor for my back pain?” (meanwhile their doctor referred them to PT 😅)

💬 “My doctor said you’ll help my back — where’s my medication?”

💬 “Don’t you only help people after a stroke or surgery?”

These comments always remind me how much more education we still need around what we really do as physical therapists — and how powerful PT can be for long-term wellness, not just recovery.

So, let’s bust some myths together.

Myths vs. Facts about Physical Therapy

Myth: Physical therapy is only for athletes or injuries.

Fact: PT helps people of all ages—from chronic pain to balance issues to preventing injuries before they happen.

Myth: PT is always painful.

Fact: While you might feel some soreness, our goal is to reduce your pain, not add to it.

Myth: You need a doctor’s referral.

Fact: In many states (including Michigan!), you can see a physical therapist directly through direct access.

Myth: It’s one-size-fits-all.

Fact: Every treatment plan is tailored to you—your body, your goals, your pace.

Myth: PTs just “fix” people.

Fact: We empower you with tools, movement strategies, and confidence so you can take charge of your health.

Myth: You can just do PT on your own.

Fact: While home exercises are great, professional guidance ensures you’re doing the right moves safely. (P.S. stay tuned for my upcoming Physio-Guided Back Pain and Joint Mobility Programs—built just for your needs!)

Myth: PT is only for post-surgery recovery.

Fact: PT is also about prevention, mobility, and longevity.

Myth: Insurance doesn’t cover PT.

Fact: Most insurance plans cover at least part of it! Always worth checking.
