Building Your Foundation—Start Strong Before the Holiday Rush
Hello Reader,
Can you believe how fast this year has flown by? It feels like just yesterday we were setting goals for 2024, and now here we are, wrapping it up. As the holiday season gets into full swing, I want to share some practical, actionable tips over the next few weeks to help you prioritize your health and navigate this busy time with ease.
Let me start by saying this: taking care of yourself doesn’t always mean pushing harder.
Last Friday after work, instead of doing a full workout, I opted for some light cardio and spent time in the sauna. My body needed a break after back-to-back events and obligations. In the past two weeks alone, I’ve had the honor of teaching a class on “Treating Athletic Back Pain” to a group of orthopedic resident physical therapists and sharing my journey to becoming a physical therapist with a class of kinesiology freshmen at the University of Michigan.
Both opportunities required preparation, but they also reminded me how far I’ve come and the value of taking moments to reflect. Sometimes, prioritizing your health means knowing when to rest.
Tip 1: Plan Ahead to Prioritize Your Health This Holiday Season
If you’re traveling or have a packed calendar, preparation is your best friend. Here’s how to set yourself up for success:
🧳 Pack Your Workout Gear
Whether you’re going away or staying local, having your workout clothes with you makes it easier to fit in quick, effective movement. Even a simple nature walk with family can do wonders for your body and mind.
🥗 Make Smart Food Choices
From office parties to Friendsgiving, indulgent foods are everywhere. I recommend eating a nutrient-rich, veggie-filled meal before heading to gatherings. For example, I know my extended family doesn’t eat like I do, so I make sure to load up on vegetables earlier in the day. This way, I can enjoy the event without overindulging. And yes, have that dessert—just not the whole cake!
💤 Prioritize Sleep and Rest
It’s tempting to pack every free moment with activities, but rest is crucial. This weekend, I’ll be taking my own advice: catching up on rest at home. When I’m not tackling my to-do list, you’ll find me on the couch, probably with the TV on! If your schedule allows, sneak in a nap or just relax with a good book or show.
