Hi Black Star Community,
Reader, you’ve probably heard it a million times: "I know I should be lifting weights." But let’s be real—sometimes after a long day, a walk or a quick cardio session seems much easier to fit in. And while there’s nothing wrong with cardio, strength training offers something that cardio alone just can’t—especially for women between the ages of 30 and 60.
Here’s why:
- It’s Not Just About Weight Loss: Strength training does so much more than help you manage your weight. It strengthens your bones, builds muscle mass, and boosts your metabolism, all of which are crucial for long-term health.
- Protect Your Bones: As we age, our bone density naturally decreases, which can lead to conditions like osteopenia or osteoporosis. Lifting weights helps combat this by stimulating bone growth. Think of it as an investment in your future mobility.
- Preserve Muscle and Hormonal Balance: After 40, we start to lose muscle mass and the rate increases after menopause! Lifting weights helps you maintain that muscle and supports hormonal regulation, especially during perimenopause and menopause. This can make a big difference in managing energy levels and mood swings. We can't stop aging but we CAN do something about how our body responds to it!
How to Get Started Without Feeling Overwhelmed: If you’re new to strength training, don’t worry—you don’t have to start with heavy weights or complex routines. Start small, with basic movements like squats, lunges, and rows. You’ll be surprised how quickly your body adapts, and soon enough, you’ll notice an improvement in your strength, posture, and overall energy.
Don’t Just Take My Word For It: I have clients in their50's & 60s managing chronic pain and still lifting weights to improve their strength and mobility. They started later in life due to pain and chronic disease but have overcome both and recognize the power in being strong all over. It’s not just about how you look—it’s about how you feel.
